The Kobo H2O is a great example of how to get it right in terms of lighting, but it uses a different kind of touch screen, so please stop with this "if Kobo can do it, why can't Amazon". The two devices are not the same.
Edit: In saying that, I think Kobo have done a better job with the lighting than Amazon across all the various ereaders. And while I'm pretty certain that there plenty of very acceptable Oasis & Voyage screens out there, a perfect one... I'm not so sure it even exists.
