@ukie - sorry for the false assumption, most questions relate to converting Word to ePub

Did you try Toxaris's e-Book Tools - a Word add-in It has an EPUB to Word feature, I don't use it myself.

Given ePub2 doesn't really have pages there are footers, hence no footnotes in the normal sense of the word. I would expect ePub 'notes' to convert to MS-Word endnotes. My earlier link tells you how to convert end-notes to footnotes.
