Yep, they have to make money at it somehow, otherwise they can't stay in business.
I use the premium myself and have it on most of the devices that I regularly use (mac, iphone, ipads). It's not perfect but it's the best that I found. The encryption option makes it viable for things that are a little more sensitive.
I use to use Yojimbo, but they are basically Mac only (a read only version on the iPad). Since I like to make little notes to myself from my iPhone and iPad, it's not a viable solution.
I use OneNote at work. I like the older version well enough, but don't use the new version that requires you use it on the cloud. The company that I work at blocks access and has a policy against storing company data on non-company servers.
