Raritan Borough, NJ

Raritan Borough* is a small town (incorporated as a borough under New Jersey's constitution) in Somerset County, NJ. Raritan Borough became an independent entity in 1948 -- prior to that it was a section of Bridgewater township.

John Basilone grew up in Raritan, and there is a statue of him on Old York Road. John Basilone was the only enlisted Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross in World War II. He was one of three marines profiled in the television mini-series The Pacific.

*Raritan is a common name in New Jersey. There is a Raritan Township in Hunterdon County, and the Raritan river is one of New Jersey's major rivers -- and it is the eastern end of the Delaware and Raritan Canal. "Raritan" apparently derives from the name of a band of Lenape Native Americans who were native to the area.
