That's an unfortunate development in recent Marvin versions.
Here, Marvin 1 was the smartest of all, because it allowed highlights (especially of different colors) to overlap, which indeed is often a practical necessity. Unfortunately, Marvin 2 destroyed that functionality, and Marvin 3 is no improvement in this regard.
