I think the devices do differ and there are better and worse screens out there. I also believe that perception varies widely. And then there are people (myself included) who do notice the faults, but nevertheless are quite happy with their imperfect devices. I know for certain that both my Voyage and Oasis have unevenly lit screens, but in adequate ambient light their screens look perfectly good. And that's all that really matters to me personally. I understand how it could bother anyone who usually reads in a darker environment than I do.
