That definitely sounds like a Python issue of some kind to me. The gui front-end is a separate program that calls the main kindleunpack code as a subprocess. So it doesn't surprise me that the gui would launch. The times I've gotten that very unhelpful (and immediate) error message is when the gui is unsuccessful in launching the subprocess.

Do you get errors when trying to split with the calibre plugin version? Are you certain the book IS a dual-format mobi in the first place? You only get dual-format mobis from using Kindlegen or KindlePreviewer to create a Kindlebook.
