Yes and no,.. Kindle uses a page refresh method (the name of which escapes me.) that minimizes E-ink ghosting problems. By default, Kindles do not a full page refresh (black flash) unless there are images, or on chapter breaks after several pages.
However, when reading with my glasses off and holding the device close, I notice a definite loss of sharpness that way, and prefer to read with the option of full page refreshes. The speed of a page refresh has certainly improved dramatically over the first few generation of devices.)
