I don't use pbchess myself or any other modification on the device. To use it, you need to look for the instructions.
If you want to play the Kobo chess, then you need to do a downgrade of firmware. Whether it is practical for you depends on what else you do with the device. If you buy books from Kobo and want to sync them with the Kobo server, then you need to stay on the current firmware. If you are reading sideloaded books, it doesn't matter much what firmware, but chosing the latest that allows chess is probably the best. Same goes if all you want is to play chess on the device.
If you downgrade the firmware, you have to do a factory reset. If you are reading books, that means you will lose the reading status and you will need put the books back on the device again. The steps are:
- Install the Kobo desktop application on a PC or Mac.
- Do a factory reset on the device.
- When prompted to setup the device, choose to use the computer.
- Start the Kobo desktop application and connect the device.
- Let the desktop application do the firmware update and do the setup, but DO NOT eject the device.
- Open the drive for the device and find the firmware files in the .kobo directory. Delete them. You are looking for the directory upgrade and the files KoboRoot.tgz and manifest.md5sum.
- Copy the firmware files for the version you want to use to the device. These will be the same names as what you deleted above.
- Eject the device.
- The device will update to the firmware you installed.
The firmware will so long as you do not sync the device. If you sync over WiFi, the latest will be downloaded and installed. If you connect to the desktop application, the latest will be downloaded. In either case, you can delete the files before the upgrade, but you won't get any new books from Kobo.
As to the firmware version to chose, from the message you quoted, v3.15 is probably the first that doesn't have chess is in the menus. The last before that is probably the sensible one. I assume that will be 3.14.0, but you should check the firmware download thread and decide on what is best for you.
