And I also wound up reading Buck Fever, by Ben Rehder. A mystery set in south Texas involving an honest game warden, a sheriff with a more flexible approach to ethics, a wealthy ex-lobbyist who is very rich and wants to get richer, etc. There is a Library Journal review that compares it to the work of Carl Hiaasen -- I think that may be a bit of an overstatement, but I enjoyed it.

It's the first in a series, and seems to be permanently free at Amazon and other retailers.

Right now I'm too busy to decide what I'll be reading next. Probably some short stories from the bottom of my TBR stack.
