It's not too bad on an eInk Kindle. If there's a word in the pop-up definition you want a definition of, you just have to tap first the button with three vertical dots, and then "Open Dictionary", after which you can tap and hold the word you want the definition of. So two extra taps for what's probably a relatively uncommon operation.
