I think the Oasis is priced right but when it was announced I dithered for over a week before I decided to buy one: $290 is quite a lot of money for any device.

To my mind, the Paperwhite is a steal at $119. I paid $440 something in 2006 for my first eInk reader because it offered a significant improvements in hardware and new e-book releases. Every reader I’ve had since then cost less than the previous one until the Oasis. It was easier to find improvements I wanted to buy when every upgrade cost less.

I liked Oasis’s longer battery life and the lower weight but those alone did not justify the cost. The unknown for me was the shape I had seen before. So I dug my ancient Ebookwise e-reader up from the cupboard bottom and just handled it again.

The EB is an old design (developed from the 1990s Rocket Book). It has a large hand-hold with two paging buttons like Oasis except the buttons are much larger. The hold is huge too but it’s what made that EB so comfortable to read from for long periods. The whole rig weighed a pound and an ounce. Even so, it was the most comfortable e-reader—no, the most comfortable book, electronic or paper—that I have ever read from. It was on the basis of that, that I decided to buy an Oasis. I have not regretted it.

So no, I do not think it is overpriced. For what it is, the Oasis is priced right.
