I have a Paperwhite 3 and I don't recall it ever locking up on me. I don't keep many books on it though. I wonder if putting a lot of books on it at the same time could have something to do with it since it has to index them all. Just guessing. It's not something I have much experience with.
I also have 2 other Paperwhites of other vintages and a Voyage. All have been extremely stable.
I think I'd try putting on just a few books a day and see if that helps and if it still locks up I'd call customer service. If it doesn't lock up try putting on the rest of the books and if that locks it up it's a pretty good start at figuring out what the problem is.
