I find it hard to be sympathetic with someone who does something like that. They ruin it for the rest of it.
In the early days of computer stores nearly all of them had very liberal return policies, kind of like Walmart does today. They understood that people wanted a chance to try things out and that sometimes their purchase wasn't a good fit and they might need a few days to realize that.
However, a lot of people were buying computers on Friday to use over the weekend for whatever purpose and returning them on Monday. The manager of our local Computer City told me about that and that the problem was a lot worse on 3 day weekends. Finally they had to include a restocking fee. A lot of stores cut out returns entirely.
As I see it that's closer to stealing than downloading a pirated ebook. That download may or may not cost the seller any money depending on whether you would have purchased it otherwise. And I'm not saying that's not stealing, but it's not as direct as stealing computer time and turning a new computer into a used one. That always takes money out of the seller's pocket.
