Genuine romance requires sex. That doesn't mean romance novels have to spell out every single part of said sexual encounter.

I suspect the original use of "trashy" might have been intended to refer to erotic romances, or even erotica. In which case, I still don't think dismissing it as trashy is either respectful or accurate. Filler sex scenes can be very enjoyable to read, if done right.

Intimacy on the other hand does not require physical contact of any form... and is not to be confused with romance.
