I don't know if I agree with a romance has to have sex in it. I've read some really good ones without any.
Some of the early regencies do not have any sex at all but kissing is really needed for a HEA. I think kissing is a necessity even if it's at the end of the novel otherwise the romance isn't believable.
I do think we are on the same page about the trashy comment.
I myself read all kinds of romances to just kisses to really hot. If the hot scenes become just filler sex I skimmed over them but if they are used as a character arc then I will read them.
