That's good to know; I would hope they would continue to support it, but as I said, mine completely locked up after trying to connect. If I ever get it to work properly, I don't know that I'm going to try to reconnect to the Kobo software.

If you buy books from Kobo and want the syncing features, you have to connect to Kobo somehow. If you are only sideloading books, you don't really need the Kobo software.

Today I let it charge all day until the LED turned blue and when we plugged it into our Mac (without Kobo software running), it suddenly popped up and worked. I transferred an epub file to it, but the Kobo doesn't recognize it at all (even after powering off and back on). So, in that respect, it was giving me the same problem of showing no books.
When it was working, I went ahead and did the factory restore through the Settings -> Advanced menu, and now it's magically stuck on "Updating the software..." and won't clear again.
I'm of the opinion that maybe the internal SD is failing.

That does sound like a hardware problem. As you have to open the device to write the image, you may as well change the card a the same time. The new devices can take a larger card and expand the user available space. I'm not sure about the WiFi. A 4GB is probably OK, but bigger might not be recognized.
