Air in the fuel system is, I think, ruled out by the fact that it will decide to start again without anything being done to it - in the most recent incident, half an hour after it wouldn't start.
The glow plugs failing is ruled out for the same reason. And also, it's not cold enough that the glow plugs are essential. Turning the engine over enough would warm the cylinders enough.
The battery is fine. The engine turns over splendidly. There's just no ignition.
My best guess is some problem with electronics controlling the fuel supply. The garage have had one go at fixing it (which cost 1/4 the retail value of the car - and half it's part exchange value!). While I might get them to have another go next week (for no additional charge!) I might just buy a car tomorrow instead.
I wonder which car the win would like best?
