There is a much older alternative,
http://arxiv-opds.herokuapp.com/catalog.atom, which was down for several months earlier but is recently back online.
This older OPDS catalog hierarchy does not perfectly mirror the hierarchy of the science subjects as listed on the arXiv.org website. For example, (1) there should be 6 instead of 14 first-level catagories, (2) Astrophysics, Condensed Matter,...,Quantum Physics should be second-level sub-catagories of first-level catagory Physics, (3) Quantitative Finance is missing from its list of first-level categories.
