Well, now I know how to turn them on -
just "quote" a post with an img tag (which causes the editor to fetch lord only knows what additional stuff) and then cancel rather than submit the new post.
Wrong!
Even opening this post of mine (without any img tags) in the advanced editor re-enables the display of GM's images.
There is a technical term for that behavior:

Just learning what things the browser downloads in response to opening the editor would probably lead to the cause of the problem (one or more of those things should be in the default page header).
