Aside: this term has always amused me, because of course the thing about Monopoly money is that within the game it is *valuable*. It is one of the two resources you can get, well, a monopoly of (it's in the name), and use to leverage into a monopoly of the other resource.
Played properly (with evil tricks like refusing to convert houses into hotels specifically to run the game out of houses and frustrate others' housebuilding efforts), Monopoly turns friends into lifelong enemies.
