Ah. Embedded astro. Suddenly the reason for the skill level, and the extreme skill at bodging and making do, becomes clear.

I mean, seriously, I write stuff that runs as root and in kernel mode on machines across the world, and I don't consider myself fit to wash the shoes of the embedded avionics guys, let alone the astro guys. If my stuff crashes really badly, it means a bunch of boxes panic (or at the very worst have to restore from backup) and I ship a bugfix and feel like an idiot. If your stuff crashes really badly it means a horribly expensive box out of human reach is forever inaccessible -- and is probably front-page news across the world.

Rocket science, as the sadly spun-to-death Hitomi recently showed us, really is rocket science.
