Assuming they are public domain and not DRMed, I'd recommend using Calibre to convert them to epub and then copy the epubs to your Kobo. The .mobi support in Kobo's firmware does not seem to have updated for any changes made in the format since Mobipocket was purchased by Amazon back in 2005(?).
