I can give you an example where it doesn't work that well to download to the device through the content server. Kindle.
Sure you *can*, but the experience of having a book loaded through the browser on a Kindle is garbage. So now say you are not local to your Calibre anymore but you want to put something else on a Kindle. Now what do you do? If you could just trigger the email function through the web server, you'd be fine.
