Nook Study may use different protocols at BN's end, they didn't discontinue it, just renamed it to Yuza or some other odd name and later spun it off to someone else. So it's more likely to keep working for awhile.
Nook for Windows has a chance to work for quite some time since they tied it to the Microsoft store.
However if you want your ebooks backed up it may be wise to seek other sources aside from BN. History has shown that they would prevent you from having any access to the ebook files if they could. There are still a fair few out there providing epub versions, Kobo, Google, Baen, etc. all of which allow you to download your purchases.
