One story is that the network felt viewers would still identify her with Laura Petrie and think she'd divorced Rob--Dick Van Dyke.
It always amazes me that Mary was originally supposed to be divorced, when the reason so many young women identified with the character back in the day was that she was a single woman who didn't mind being single.
