I don't routinely use mine near water because water = hard tiled surfaces. That plus taking the cover off to read in water means it's a "no way" for me, even without the potential risks to the waterproofing.
The waterproofing is fabulous to have, however, in case I spill coffee or a glass of water, or just so that I can wash it down now and then and have it sparkling clean.
