Frustrating, much? Sorry to read that.
That was not the case for me. In fact, the Customer Service rep who issued my promo credit advised me (unbidden) that I could use the promotional credit he was issuing for one or more of the ebooks in question, for as long as they remained in the Kindle store, or I could apply it toward any other Amazon purchases I chose, in the categories listed below. (That information changed the way I saw the three titles on offer, as it added the element of
opportunity cost into the equation.)
After reading your post, which reflected an experience different from what I was told to expect, I decided to check my promotional credit balance by:
- Clicking this link* (this link works, too, in the USA*) at the "Redeem Your Amazon Gift Card or Promotional Code" page, then
- Clicking the yellow Check Your Balance button, and finally
- Reviewing the following listing of my various credit balances. (Note: $17.97 is the credit for the "3 FREE Kindle Bestsellers"):

My promo credit is present, accounted for, and redeemable for all possible categories of purchases except purchases of Amazon gift cards. If yours is not, then implementing the plan you outlined makes sense.
*FYI, while you might not need this, Koland, some other MobileReaders might find it useful to read "
How do I check my promotional credit with Amazon?", to find the link relevant to them.
