Newbie question - hot to get files into device

Hi
This may seem obvious to you but I noticed recently that I don't know what procedures are there to upload files into the device.
At the moment I'm trying to choose between Kobo Glo HD and Pocketbook 626 Touch Lux 3 to be my first e-reader.
I always thought that all I have to do in order to get files in to the device is to plug-in USB and drag&drop because it will be recognized as a USB flash memory (like pendrive) or at least connected with MTP. I also thought that I would use WiFi to sync files with my local server where I would keep my files by using some app (FTP, Samba, owncloud etc.). Is this even possible? Because if not then what's the point of having WiFi when I won't use built-in services and I will buy books from local dealers not through built-in shop.
