I read the first three or four back in DTB days, but was sort of "meh" about them, more because of subject/setting than anything really wrong with them. I remember thinking the writing was pretty good, but I'm much more into historical mysteries, and mysteries set in places/cultures I like or have an emotional connection to. Probably fair to say it wasn't the books, it was me

With that said, this is a very popular series, and the first few titles won/were finalists for a bunch of awards.

Hopefully someone who has read more of them, or more recently, can also comment.
