I'm struggling with this issue right now. I've had an e-reader since the first generation Kindle, and haven't used a cover, and haven't broken any. The closest I've come to damaging one is when trying to remove my current Kindle Voyage from a fiendishly snug cover I bought to try (ACdream SmartShell Case), and have been too afraid to use again.
I don't really want a cover, because why add back on that extra weight that the designers have toiled to remove from the device? ... and even though I didn't think it would be a big difference, it really feels a *lot* nicer to me holding the lighter / smaller Voyage than the slightly heavier Paperwhite.
Yet, I feel that the Voyage purchase was a fairly expensive indulgence, and I really ought to be careful to protect it. So a bit of a conundrum. At the moment, I'm going with no-cover. I protect in some sort of sleeve if I'm going to carry it around in my bag, though.
