I have changed the "courier" font in a .txt file by using Word into Comic Sans and then saving as an .rtf and dragging and dropping into the 505 reader, but it is not changing the font, even though it is shown in the Reader as an .rtf file.

The Sony reader has built-in three fonts
one monospaced type
one serif font
one sans-serif font
Search discussion threads for the names of the fonts if you are interested.
At the moment I can't find the thread where I read the names of the Reader internal fonts.
here is one of many, many discussions we had about fonts on Sony Reader.

You can find even an example of the a formated rtf file.
Try changing the font in rtf file to Arial or Helvetica and you get the built-in Sony sans-serif font. This is my favourite font for reading. Try size 16, it is my favourite. Also set page margins to something small. Like 0.001mm ;-)
You can also set your rtf document to use Times New Roman and in that case the Sony Reader will display your text using its built-in serif font
If you want to use your own fonts you can either create pdf file with embeded fontsusing for example OpenOffice.org, you can make lrf file with embeded fonts using Calibre or BookDesigner, or you can flash your reader with different fonts.
