Personally, I don't use a autopopulated list. What I use is a list for each device I have. When add a new book, or make a change to one, I add it to the lists for the devices I want it on. For my main device, the list automatically syncs. For the others, when I connect, I manually do the sync.
If you don't want to update the on-device list every time, you are probably better to manually manage it. When the device is connected, select all the books on the device and add them to the appropriate list.
