Another Cat, you presented some ideas that also occurred to me. The waves "flapping" prose got to me as well when I read it. I didn't analyse it as intensely as you did, but it "flapped" rather than flowed. And I did feel a bit jarred sometimes by words which didn't seem to fit. Your other quote about time flapping on the mast didn't disturb me for the same reasons you mentioned, but because it is supposed to be part of a description of stillness.
Also, it's interesting you mentioned the waves/water obsession as this occurred to me also. Your comments along with Bookpossum's resonated as I expected Clarissa to commit suicide by the end of the novel because of the water and drowning references towards the start of the book. After your post, I realise I might have been influenced by Woolf's own fate.
Out of curiosity, there were a few words I came across that didn't seem to be real words. I'm not sure if they were at the time of writing and have faded from common language, or whether they were deliberate innovations of Woolf. I didn't note any of them down, nor did I bother fact checking when I came across them, so I can't provide any examples. However, I'm wondering if anyone else noticed them.
