Woolf was a tireless editor of her own writing -- constantly revising her pages, agonizing over every word choice. And her husband, Leonard Woolf, a fine writer and editor himself, oversaw the final version of books printed (and typeset by hand) by the Hogarth Press.

AnotherCat - it sadly appears to me that your opinion of the book was 'tainted' by your previous knowledge of its author, and your perceptions of her personality, class affiliation, etc. And her dislike of Joyce.
