Audio books are hideously expensive to produce (and time consuming. I've done short stories and an hour of finished work takes 3 hours of recording and at least that in editing).

It's an odd promotion, but perhaps the idea is to get people hooked on audio books. It's one of the few growing aspects of books right now and I know some people avoid it because of the higher expense of audio books.
