The short answer is that you need to use Kindle for PC.
The reason is that Amazon has made it difficult to access the automatically downloaded book files on Fire Tablets. Even if you find the files, any with DRM will be unusable because Fire DRM is unsupported by "the tools". Also, any books with "enhanced typesetting" will be in KFX format, which cannot be processed or converted by any existing software even if you could remove the DRM, which you can't.

Thanks--yes, I am talking about books that I purchased from Amazon (usually to get the Whispersync price on the corresponding Audible book, then never bothered to DL the Kindle book). I have Kindle for PC installed on an old temperamental laptop; I thought that maybe with the new Fire I could bypass Kindle for PC and just transfer them to Calibre.
But just out of curiosity, even if I can't convert them, where ARE the Kindle files on the Fire? I had used File Explorer to search for azw and mobi files with no results. I just now looked for kfx (which I'd never heard of), and nothing comes up for that format either.
