I know you weren't asking me, but crime fiction is my bag, so I'll throw out a short list:

1) Ed McBain's 87th Precinct books
2) Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books
3) PD James' Adam Dalgliesh books
4) Chester Himes' Harlem Detective books
5) James Crumley's The Last Good Kiss
6) Dennis Lehane's Kenzie & Gennaro books
7) Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole books

There are of course many more, but those (especially near the top of the list) always make for a good read, and in my opinion, several attain to the level of "good crime novel."

Of course, there's also a classic like Crime & Punishment
