As for the other two, I like fantasy better than urban fantasy although Dresden is obviously much more popular. I am leaning towards Codex Alera but wanted some opinions.
sidenote: not happy about the publisher pricing of his ebooks at amazon...ebooks that are several years old and cost more than the paperbacks is not cool

I would also recommend the Dresden Files first. Like Alan, I enjoyed them immensely from the get go, and read the first nine back to back while on holiday over five or six days. Then I had to join the rest of the waiting club for each new book year to year.
I really quite enjoyed the Codex Alera, but only after I had abandoned it and come back to it after a couple years. The first time I read the first book, I just couldn't get into it. I found that I felt that I had missed something, or that I should know some of the physics and history of the world before I started, and was kinda lost almost immediately. Once I did get into it though, I enjoyed it.
Unfortunately for me, I have recently tried the Aeronaut's Windlass, and was disappointed. Like Codex though, I might go back to it later when I'm in more of a forgiving mood.
Jim Butcher is also my favourite current authour, and the one single writer whose books I have zero qualms about paying full price for in ebook form so that I can get to the story immediately.
