Haven't listened to Codex Alera although I have the first 3 audiobooks (yeah, what's up with that? I am SO behind!).
I am not into steampunk either, but I really liked the Aeronaut's Windlass. The first few chapters are required to introduce the characters and to get into the style, but after that the story really started to fly. Some characters are more likable than others, but that is in all the stories of course. I am looking forward to the next installment even if it will take a while...
