Just spent 20+ hours listening to Special Topics in Calamity Physics (because who can resist a title like that?) by Marisha Pessl. I don't quite know what to make of it--it's trying a little too hard to be brilliantly dazzling, it's pretentious and overstuffed ... and yet it's both compelling and fascinating, and I did enjoy it. I would have benefited from having a text copy to refer to; I frequently got lost in the flights of narrative and had to rewind to see what the heck the relevant point was. Also, the text version apparently included "visual aids."
I'm now eyeing Pessl's second book, Night Film, but I may try something short as a palate cleanser before I jump into that one.
