This is indeed a known issue. Right now I'm having it only extract the author and title from the filename. The format Calibre writes the files is title_-_author_number.extention. This is what it uses to extract the info. It's on my todo list to have it get the info from the book itself (provided the book supports it). Also, you're absolutely right, the first priority was getting the device to synchronize.
