Firstly, I keep all my pdf files on the external SD. When I turn on the i86, it will state that it is "preparing" the SD card, however, no books show up (e.g. in Recently Read). What I must do – which is annoying, but, at least, a consistent work-around – is then go to Storage, and then press the External SD icon. This "mounts" the SD card. When I then navigate back to the main menu, my recently read books are visible and I can search the Library (which I like cannot do without the work-around via Storage).

Obviously, I would like if the SD card was preped and mounted automatically, even if it entails a longer start-up time. If anybody could contribute to a solution I'd be very appreciative. Thanks.
While the SD is mounting you should see a small icon on the status bar to the right of the wifi icon. Tapping on that will cause the last read document to open or the last read items to appear. Seems a little bit haphazard on mine but that may be because I don't bother to remember how it was when I closed it down.

Waiting for the SD card to get ready is infuriating and it is made even worse by the fact that the maximum sleep is 1 hour so you have this problem every time you go to read.
