You can buy a replacement battery online. Kindles intermittenly need more power than can be supplied by the power cable alone (especially with 3G), and these power spikes can cause it to reboot. You need a (non-dead) battery for reliable use. They are not difficult to change (provided your cover is not glued on, where a hair dryer may be used to soften the glue).

I had the same problem (and the same symptoms) on a PW3 I just got. The battery was obviously bad upon opening my kindle (the battery was "puffed" -- inflated with gas). I swapped in a good battery salvaged from a dead PW2, and now the PW3 is much more reliable (no more spontaneous reboots).
