1) The command to delete (unlink) a file and to delete a directory are not the same.
2) Yes, this is not proof against being over-ridden.
In fact, some firmware's can defeat it, most can't.
3) Since it depends on the firmware version **installed** (not the firmware version to be installed) - we find people willing to test this for each version.
They make this file addition and then intentionally expose their Kindle to the OTA update process.
No chance of needing soldering skills, the worst that can happen is the Kindle will OTA update.
So the testing is done by people who are intending to update (later) anyway but are willing to give this a try for a period of time.
You want to see your Kindle really get its panties in a bunch?
Put a directory named:
testWrite.txt
in the highest level of visible USB storage.
Then watch the logs (;dm).
No chance of needing soldering skills for that one either - -
