KF8 means Kindle Format 8. It has the file extension *.azw3 and is roughly equivalent to an EPUB.
So, since EPUB can be a series of image files (if someone was weird enough to want to make such an EPUB), so can AZW3.

By no means is it a requirement...

Note that there are other azw-type formats, e.g. AZW4 is Print Replica and contains an actual PDF file inside.
