I know you don't like in-ear earbuds, but I use these; they're comfortable, wear like iron, and are dirt cheap. I'm no audiophile, but they sound fine to me - far better than my other cheap earbuds. They certainly seem more than adequate for audiobooks, which is all I listen to.
