I have fixed the problem. It may help others if I describe the solution.
Firstly I connected the hanlin to another computer which happens to be running Vista. It came up with en error message when I opened the built in storage disc that there was a corrupt file on the disc. It offered to scan and fix the error however when I selected this option it came back with the message that it could not scan since the disc was in use.
I then deleted the two books I have on the disc. The scan was then successfully achieved and I can now load books.
