I was thinking about downloading epub instead, so I tried the Delete All with Missing Book option and everything disappeared from CC. Then, it occurred to me that maybe this was OK ... I could download any book with K4A that I wanted to read and it didn't matter if there was no actual book downloaded (yes, I know that you said that was impossible, but that's what things looked like on my device).

I have no idea what is happening here. As far as I know, if you download a book using CC then that book file is stored somewhere. How it could be "nowhere" is beyond comprehension.
The only answers are:
- CC failed to download the book but didn't notice the failure.
- Some other app deleted (moved?) the book file.
- The book was downloaded by something other than CC.
I don't know which of these is true.

So, I did a fresh download of everything with formats set to azw* and mobi. At the end of the download, file manager showed the CC directory full of files, but CC showed no books! I tried various things connecting and disconnecting and such hoping that it would notice all the books, but to no avail.

What did you use to download the books?
As above, it is extremely difficult to see how CC thinks it downloads a book file, actually succeeds in downloading that book file, then fails to enter that book into its own database. This is assuming of course that you haven't told CC to ignore books (see below).

So, back to the plan about using a different format and possibly a different reader. I deleted all the files in the CC directory and then changed the format to epub and did a fresh download. Again, files in file manager and no books. Then I noticed that there was a search displayed at the top. I deleted that, and all the books appeared! I guess that even though the search criteria would have found books done fresh on the new set, that it was still pointing at prior books or some such.

There might be an interesting case here. CC might not regenerate a search when new books appear. I will look at that.

So, now the only problem is connecting the downloaded books to FBReader (which I installed simply because it is what my wife uses on her Android tablet). It seems to point to /storage/emulated/0/books. FBReader won't navigate to /storage/emulated/0/Calibre_Companion (says permission denied when I get to emulated). But, CC seems to know about FBR since it will now open the books ... yes?
So, no need to delete all the books again and change the download location to books and redownload?

I can't speak for what FBReader does.
I am going away for most of the week and will be away from keyboard. I hope other CC users can help work out what is happening.
