Clicking register wants you to setup wifi, but that could lead to an unfortunate update.

Put the update on the USB root, re-boot it (or wait for it to self-reboot in your case
).
That will get you 5.6.5 and **maybe** over-write whatever is so wonky (tm) about the current firmware installed. **maybe**.
Now jailbreaking it - ah, there you will have to be able to reach the Kindle's browser - -
But....
Maybe the update will have fixed that ...
